How Argentina’s Currency Exchange Works in 2025

How Argentina’s Currency Exchange Works in 2025

How does the dollar work in Argentina since 2025?

Argentina is well-known for its currency volatility and restrictions, often referred to as cepos cambiarios. At the start of 2025, President Javier Milei’s government set a single official rate for the U.S. dollar, putting an end to more than 15 different exchange rates. Some of those rates are still used in specific sectors, but for everyday travelers and locals, what really matters is the unified rate.

Today, the dollar has a single value, which you can always check on the official website of the Central Bank of Argentina: bcra.gob.ar.

Of course, the exchange rate still fluctuates based on political and economic factors. While 2025 has brought more stability, the country continues to feel the effects of inflation and higher living costs.

Practical tips for travelers

If you’re visiting on vacation, here’s the good news: in Buenos Aires, you can pay for almost everything with a credit card, debit card, or even with contactless from your phone.

Still, it’s smart to bring some cash for small purchases, tips, or emergencies. Here are my best tips:

  • Bring newer, higher denomination bills. If you plan to exchange at cuevas (informal exchange houses), $50 and $100 bills are preferred. Smaller bills like $10 or $20 usually get worse rates.
  • The fun fact: the “arbolitos.” On Florida Street, you’ll hear people saying “cambio, cambio.” These are the arbolitos—nicknamed this way because, just like little trees, they’re always standing in the same spot. They guide you to informal exchange houses. These aren’t illegal, just not official like banks.
  • Banks. If you’d rather keep things simple, you can always exchange at a bank. There, it doesn’t matter if your bills are old or small denominations. Just remember to bring your passport and check opening hours: banks in Buenos Aires are open Monday to Friday, from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm.

Things to keep in mind

  • Even with a more stable exchange rate in 2025, Argentina still has inflation. Don’t exchange all your money on your first day unless your stay is under two weeks.
  • Not every ATM dispenses U.S. dollars. To avoid issues, it’s better to bring some cash with you from home.
  • Use your cards for most expenses. Even public transportation in Buenos Aires accepts them.

My final recommendations

  1. Bring some cash, but don’t exchange it all at once if you’re staying long-term.
  2. Rely mainly on your credit or debit cards.
  3. Trust your intuition and exchange money where you feel most comfortable.

I hope this guide helps you understand how Argentina’s exchange system works in 2025.

See you next time!

From Samba to Sunrise: Experiencing the Magic of Rio Carnival

From Samba to Sunrise: Experiencing the Magic of Rio Carnival

Ready for the party of your life?

Carnival in Rio de Janeiro. It’s a whirlwind of vibrant colors, infectious music, and non-stop energy. I recently had the chance to experience this iconic celebration, and let me tell you, it was an absolute blast! I’m here to share the highlights of my Carnival adventure, along with some tips to help you navigate the madness and maximize the fun.

Safety First (But Don’t Let it Spoil the Fun):

You’ll find plenty of warnings online about pickpockets and safety concerns during Carnival. While it’s definitely wise to be mindful of your belongings, especially your phone in those massive crowds, don’t let fear overshadow the experience. I was pleasantly surprised by the overall positive and festive atmosphere. Everyone was focused on having a good time, and I didn’t witness any aggressive behavior or theft.

For a joyful experience, keep these tips in mind:

  • Buy a strip holder: I purchased mine on Amazon, and it attaches perfectly to my phone! This way, you can keep your essentials close and secure.
  • Wear a moon bag across your chest: For extra protection, secure the buckle with a carabiner. This will deter pickpockets and keep your belongings safe in the crowds.
  • Pace yourself with the caipirinhas: When in Brazil, you’ll definitely want to try this iconic cocktail, but don’t overdo it. Staying aware and safe is crucial, especially if you’re traveling solo.
  • Make copies of your documents: Leave the originals in a safe place, and carry copies with you just in case.
  • Leave your cards at home: All you need is cash and your phone to have a blast at the blocos!

Kissing Bandits? Not So Much:

Another thing you might hear about is the abundance of PDA and people wanting to kiss you. Yes, there’s definitely a lot of love in the air (and sometimes on the lips!), but it’s all in good fun. If you’re not feeling the love, a simple “no, thank you” will suffice. No one will pressure you or get aggressive.

The Sambadrome: A Must-See Spectacle:

The heart of Carnival is the Sambadrome, a massive stadium designed by the legendary architect Oscar Niemeyer. This is where the world-famous samba school parades take place. Imagine a 700-meter-long runway filled with thousands of dancers, elaborate floats, and dazzling costumes. It’s a sensory overload in the best possible way!

Tips for the Sambadrome:

  • Splurge on the VIP Experience: For an unforgettable night with prime viewing, comfortable seating, unlimited food and drinks, and an amazing lineup of live artists, purchase a VIP box ticket that includes transfers. If possible, select a box near the judges in sector 10 for the optimal experience.
  • Explore Other Options with Bookers International: If a VIP box isn’t your style, Bookers International offers other ticket options. I personally chose sector 10, and while transportation was a bit hectic, Bookers’ “Angels” service for pairs was extremely helpful.
  • Prepare for a Long Night: The parades start around 10:00 PM and continue until 5:00 AM the next morning. Pace yourself, stay hydrated, and wear comfortable shoes. You’ll be on your feet for a while!

Beyond the Sambadrome:

While the Sambadrome is the main event, don’t miss out on the other Carnival festivities happening throughout the city. Street parties, known as blocos, pop up everywhere, with live music, dancing, and costumes galore.

Private Parties: A Touch of Luxury:

For a more exclusive experience, check out the private Carnival parties. I attended the one organized by Fairmont hotel at their beach club, Tropik, and it was fantastic. The music, the food, the atmosphere – everything was top-notch.

Other useful tips:

  • Exchange your US dollars at the airport, where you’ll get the best rate from official exchangers. There’s no need to exchange a lot of cash; instead, use a wallet that allows you to pay with Pix (the Brazilian Google Pay) like a local. Everyone accepts this payment form, from taxi drivers to street vendors. For this, use apps like DolarApp or my favorite, Belo.

Use my Belo referral code GISSELP1 to earn rewards.

  • Purchase Sambadrome tickets 4 months in advance to get the best deal and location.
  • Book airfare 4 months in advance as well for the best prices.
  • Don’t bother purchasing costumes beforehand unless you want something special for the blocos. You’ll find plenty of costumes and fantasies everywhere in Rio.
  • Check the blocos’ schedule on their official website.

Final Thoughts:

Carnival in Rio is an experience unlike any other. It’s a celebration of life, music, and culture that will leave you breathless. So, embrace the energy, let loose, and create memories that will last a lifetime. Just remember to keep your phone close, your smile wide, and your dancing shoes ready!
